A different diagnosis
Classic SEO optimises for ranking in a list of links. AI answer engines read the page, extract the clearest answer they can find, and quote it — often without sending a click. Content that still ranks fine can be invisible to them: the answer is buried, the paragraphs ramble, the structure is missing, and there are no machine-readable signals.
That is a different problem from a ranking drop, and it needs a different diagnosis. WellCited measures the signals that decide whether your page is quotable — and tells you which ones your content is missing.
How it works
Every post is scored by rule-based checks that run in PHP on your own server. Checks that don’t apply to a post are excluded rather than counted against it, and the sidebar lists every check behind the score. Posts too short for a meaningful audit are labelled as such instead of getting a flattering number.
Findings appear in the block editor with the top three fixes ranked by score impact. The Answer Capsule block gives you a clearly delimited, machine-readable direct answer. Structured data is added additively — any type your SEO plugin already outputs is skipped, never duplicated.
WellCited is designed to work alongside Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO and SEOPress, not replace them. It adds no database queries on the frontend and a few hundred bytes of output.

Pro uses your own OpenAI, OpenRouter, Hugging Face or compatible API key. There is no WellCited server, no subscription to an AI service through us, and no markup on API costs. Every AI suggestion is shown as a diff for you to approve before anything is written.
Built for real client work
Small agencies and freelancers who look after a handful of client sites and need to answer a question they’re increasingly being asked: “why is our traffic falling when our rankings are fine?” The bulk audit, the CSV export and the branded client report exist because that conversation happens in a meeting, not in a plugin screen.

The honest boundary
No tool can guarantee that an AI engine will cite your page. Engines change, weight sources differently, and often draw on material they indexed long ago. WellCited measures machine-readability signals — how clearly your content states an answer, how well it is structured, and whether the machine-readable metadata is present and valid. Those are the parts you control.
The free plugin makes zero external requests: no API calls, no CDN assets, no telemetry, no update pings. Your content never leaves your server.

No. It is built to coexist and is tested alongside each of them. WellCited detects the structured data your SEO plugin already outputs and skips those types instead of duplicating them.
No. Audits run only in the admin area, on demand. On the frontend the plugin adds no extra database queries and at most a few hundred bytes.
From the free plugin, nothing. Every audit runs locally in PHP on your server. Pro calls only the AI endpoint you configure, with your own key, and only when you trigger a fix.

SEO optimises for ranking in a list of links. GEO — generative engine optimisation — optimises for being quoted in an AI-generated answer. The two overlap, but a page can rank well and still be unquotable.
Treat it as a diagnostic, not a benchmark. It tells you which signals a specific post is missing; it is not a ranking prediction.
